Dependency of a child occurs when a court finds that a child has been abused, neglected, abandoned or is at imminent risk of being abused, neglected or abandoned.  A Petition for Dependency can be brought by the Department of Children and Families , or a private dependency case can be initiated by anyone with knowledge of a possible dependency situation.
